EMD Millipore MColorpHast pH Test Strips provide a convenient method for accurate colorimetric pH indication. The strips feature covalently bound indicator dyes so that they will not bleed even in strong alkaline solutions. Strips can be immersed in samples for extended periods, so that even weakly buffered solutions can be accurately tested without contaminating the sample. The universal strip tests the full 0–14 pH range with a sensitivity of 1 pH unit.

For general, non-critical dispensing applications

For many low water content samples, coulometric titration is the preferred method of water determination. EMD Chemicals has developed a selection of formulations for these types of determination including single solution reagents, as well as dual anode/cathode reagents. Each type of reagent system is chosen depending on the application and/or the personal preference of the scientist. EMD Chemicals added two new choices of single-solution reagents for coulometric titration.

When water content of the sample exceeds 1%, volumetric determination is usually the method of choice. There are many choices of reagents to perform water determination using the Karl Fischer titration method. The reagent initially developed by Karl Fischer was a one-component reagent; that is, it included all of the basic components for the reaction. Over the years research has produced formulations with different bases, mostly to avoid the objectionable pungent odor of pyridine.

Aquastar CombiTitrant 5 Keto and Aquastar CombiSolvent Keto are two new reagents formulated specifically for the determination of water in sample matrices containing aldehydes and ketones. Because aldehydes and ketones are so reactive, they can sometimes have undesirable side reactions with the normal alcohol solvents resulting in errors in water titration and sluggish endpoints. In the Aquastar CombiTitrant 5 Keto reagent and CombiSolvent Keto, the commonly used ethylene glycol monomethyl ether has been replaced with a non-toxic alcohol.

In two-component reagent systems, the reactive components are contained in two separate reagents - titrant and solvent. The primary advantage of the two-component system is higher stability compared to one-component systems. Aquastar two-component reagents for volumetric Karl Fischer titration have been further improved to give an increased titration rate and higher reproducibility.

EMD Chemicals now offer Aquastar Solvents for Oils and Fats. These new Aquastar reagents have been developed using alternate solvent systems that do not contain chloroform. Since mineral oils are mixtures of long-chain aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and fats are glycerol esters and higher fatty acids, the two substances have different dissolution characteristics requiring different dissolution aids. EMD has developed effective solvent systems to be used for each of these types of samples.
